Controlled atmosphere

Massive and thermochemical treatments (cementation, carbo-nitriding, oil quenching and tempering, nitrogen stress relieving, normalization and annealing)are carried out in CIEFFE automatic lines. These are managed by an automatic 4.0 Prosys-Prover system, which allows process control and the advancement of treatment loads, using automatic loaders.

All plants can be controlled both locally and remotely and guarantee the recording of approved thermal cycles, the recording processes performed and the traceability of critical parameters associated with treatment loads.

Capabilities

The detail of the plants with a load capacity of 2,000 kg and load size 1,000 x 1,200 x H 1,050, present collectively in the automatic lines in the two establishments is as follows:

Temprasud (Fresagrandinaria)

7 chamber furnaces model LLF for the execution of the austenitization, carburization and carbo-nitriding phases, characterized by:

  • quenching fluids with different severity and washability qualities depending on the criticality of the components to be treated;
  • double atmosphere control by CO/CO2 analyzer and oxygen probe;
  • double temperature control.

4 chamber furnaces model FVF for performing the pre-heating and nitrogen tempering phases.

2 triple-stage WCF model washing machines (pre-wash, wash and rinse) for carrying out the pre-washing and post-treatment washing phases of the loads with immersion, spray and drying functions.

1 SZ model plant for the execution of the sub-cooling phases up to -90°C for the complete transformation of residual austenite into martensite.

1 automatic tank for oiling in order to improve the oxidation resistance of the treated pieces awaiting delivery to the end customer.

Treatments

The carbo-cementation, or more commonly “cementation”, consists of the surface carburization of low carbon steel parts at a temperature higher than Ac3.
The treatment is intended for mechanical parts that must combine surface hardness and wear resistance with fatigue resistance (the increase in volume of the carburized and tempered layer linked to the martensitic transformation of the carbon-enriched steel induces compressive stresses in the surface layer, greatly increasing the fatigue limit).

Carbo-nitriding is a thermochemical enrichment treatment carried out at temperatures above Ac3, in the austenitic field in an atmosphere capable of simultaneously transferring carbon and nitrogen.
Nitrogen strongly increases the hardenability of the diffusion layer and, being an austenite stabilizer, significantly lowers the Ac1 and Ac3 critical points. It can be performed at lower temperatures than cementation with lower risks of deformation, obtaining hard and wear-resistant surface layers on less-alloyed steels but with fatigue resistance values lower than those obtainable with the cementation treatment.
